Reflection Week 5 - Presentation Tools

Teachers who incorporate ICT tools into the classroom are moving away from the traditional 'teacher-centric' method towards creating a more 'learner-centric' learning environment (infoDev Growing Innovation, 2013).

These tools just keep getting better and better! I actually cannot believe how much is out there in regards to presentation tools. I could easily keep exploring and exploring and exploring and exploring.... If you get my point?

How to set up your own Prezi:
Using a Prezi was quite straightforward.
I simply signed up for a Prezi and then watched the getting started videos. All the videos are quite short so its very time efficient and easy to navigate.
I definitely recommend adding a prezi tool to your capabilities - i find the more you have the more options you have to utilise within your classroom as a teacher.
Use this link to start up your own Prezi!

The great thing about Prezi is:
It is an ICT tool which is awesome for presenting ideas on a virtual canvas. It allows users to zoom in, out and all around the page of the presented media.  It is ideally great for global learners as it has multiple options on how you wish to view the materials, whether or not this is a overall picture or step by step guide. You can also use Prezi for collaborating with up to 10 different editors - great to use as a classroom group task. Not only is it ideal to get your students to see the big picture of things but  break it all down as well. Prezi is also available for view as a mobile app, you can download the prezi onto your computer/usb or even upload in into your blog through an embed code or link (like how I have myself). This presentation is a great technical tool to utilise within a classroom. Use it in ways of teaching your content but also ways that allow your students to build their own creative flair as individuals or incorporate group collaborative task exercises.

Using this in a classroom:
Well to start off with, I drove the creativity and style of my prezi around teaching a lesson of year 11 dance (my chosen major). It sets a clear feed forward to the students and the intended learning outcomes of the lesson. I have then broken segments into chunks as I find this would be easier on the students to break the functionality of the lesson down into parts. A lesson is only 70 minutes long so therefore time can be an issue unless the structure of my presented lesson was clear. The reason why I have designed it like this is due to the fact that it would be much more difficult to comprehend all the learning materials if it was all moulded together in a huge lump.

Chucking up a whole bunch of material into a presentation would leave students feeling:

  • Bored
  • Unfocused
  • Disengaged from learning
  • lacking interest
Scaffolding however will leave the students feeling:

  • More easily focused
  • concentration towards the intended topic
  • guidance within the task
  • less overwhelmed with new content knowledge

So the students will therefore be able to travel at their own pace throughout the task, deciding what chunks they should spend the most of their time on and what parts will be easy to fly through. It makes it more realistically achievable for the students to reach the end task when all the components are scaffolded and broken down into segments.

Other ways I could use prezi is to get the students themselves to create their own. As individuals when it comes to their choreographic assessment, it would be nice to see them set it out in a way to break down their own intended goals, time-frame of events and all the content needed before handing in their final assessment for the term.

Such a great tool to incorporate into my future developing practice!

Week 4 Digital Tool 6 - VIDEO

 DIGITAL VIDEO EXPERIENCE

This is a great Digital video experience I created after a recent trip to New York. It does take some effort and time to fine-tune and pick the details but overall its a great experience. It was just like designing my own little collage of a magnificent journey! I am also in the process of designing a show-reel for myself as a dance choreographer. There are many options for the use of video. Teaching students the knowledge of creating, manipulating and crafting the structure of a digital tool like video could become such a valuable experience for the learners.

Not only has the production of a video been great for me to use but would be perfect to use within the dance curriculum. Students can incorporate different angles or positioning, locations, clothing, structure...anything really! Simply, an awesome tool to use for things such as assessment pieces, drafting of students work or just to engage the students in your everyday class. It could also be a tool to use within your classroom to show progression within particular units - where they were initially at to where they eventually finish. Using a digital video tool, allows for so much creativity and you could use it in any field really. Profiling students could be as simple as allowing them with the creativity to define their own lifestyle and interests through an edited video.

I thoroughly enjoyed the crafting of this video and will continue to do so for enjoyment and especially for enhancing my future students learning and designing capabilities.

Week 3 Reflection

WELCOME TO MY WEEK 3!

So much content to get through this week and so little time! I've incorporated a PMI chart as recommended in this week's learning materials. A great tool and easy to use with your students to visualise the pros and cons of anything really! I have attached the link if you wish to enhance your students learning.

Positives
Negatives
Implications
Blogs
(Digital Tool 1)
Individualised learning
Gives learners time to self-reflect
Helps learners better their writing skills through expressing themselves through reflection
You are the author
Add images, graphics videos to enhance.
Biased/subjective comments that are harsh towards the learners own reflection
Takes time to update your blog
Depending on the task, not all content is appropriate for postings onto blogs
Incorporates many multi media forms
Blogging can be informal learning in an alternative way
An up-to-date learning tool where students are encouraged to express themselves and share it with others
Wikis
(Digital Tool 2)
Collaborative Learning
Promotes creativity
Easy to share information
Students can modify, add or remove content.
Students could be unfamiliar with the software
Chance of vandalism and inappropriate use of the wiki happening
Can become quite overwhelming with too many responses
Creates a research centre of information for the students.
Students can refer back to wikis

Websites
(Digital Tool 3)
Individualised learning
Allows for creativity
Student can construct their own website with the design of their own choice
Have to be careful to not copyright/use others ideas without recognising/referencing them
Can require a lot of time and structure (snippets of codes/embed links and graphics)
Allows students to showcase their individual creativity
Can enhance students elearning and abilities to use digital tools.

Ultimately I found the construction of these digital tools was based around -

BLOGS: Single authored page, can add content (your students own ideas), interaction still occurs but through comments onto a particular post (not necessarily a discussion), with a chronological appearance.

WIKIS: Multi-authored page, anyone is able to edit/add/remove information on the wiki, collaborative interaction/discussions can occur here, wikis are not in chronological order.

WEBSITES: Single-authored page, can add any type of content with the appropriate embed codes, interaction available for the all the students to be able to view each others pages.

Im going to finish up today with a little video (found on youtube) of where we are heading to with the future web 3.0!

Diving Deep into Pedagogy

Going for a more visual approach in this blog - I want you to think deeply, find your own interpretation, whilst visualising my approach to pedagogy.

What is good pedagogy?
- challenge yourself
- question your motives
- ask for feedback
- trust your independence

Learning is everywhere !

Which way is right?         >>>>>>>>
<<<<<<<         Which way is Wrong?

Access multiple frameworks
Incorporate ICT
Apply productive pedagogies

Pedagogy is the art of teaching!
It involves teaching and learning to coincide with one another...
Together they form Ying and Yang - creating learning outcomes for all!
